Message from Mr. Parsley

The New Year, or more so 2017, is upon us.  And with this comes the grind of having to get through the winter months as we all anxiously await spring.

In terms of some of the happenings within the VCSC, we have returned our students to Riley Elementary and the focus steers away from construction at Riley as collectively we have given to the students and staff a brand new building.  And with this brand building what a fabulous building it is.  The Open House back in December was nothing less than phenomenal.  We had every bit of 350 people that came through that night and every single person that I talked to that night was amazed.  It is that same feeling that I had when I got to see Clark’s Crossing.  While nothing changed structurally or more so with the foundation of the building, everything on the interior and above and below the building changed.  This includes paint, flooring, HVAC, etc.  It is exciting that we have been able to deliver this to the community but this would not have been possible if it were not for the team that was in place.  This includes Myszak and Palmer, Garmong, the Board, and our many different internal folks from all of the different departments that we have internally.  I am so proud of this entire collective group of people.

The focus now must be academics within the building of Riley.  While this was a focus when the students were not in their building, they still became somewhat shortchanged with the times of transition.

Tecumseh-Harrison becomes our next school that we prepare to remodel and also transition the students out of the building.  Construction will begin in May and students will not return to the building until August of 2018.  The building is already in the design phase and will be ready to go out to bid at some point in March.  This is both exciting and also brings some heightened anxiety as it is a larger building than that of Riley and we will also displace more students.  The building is also considerably older and more so having the original structure that goes back to 1906.

Referencing back to the academics, the second semester brings so much of the focus to this.  Regardless of what we all think of standardized testing, it is what it is and this will take place in the spring.  Considering that so much of the testing is tied to the teachers and to the schools under the accountability model, we must place a heavy emphasis upon this.  I have long stated that we lose some of the creativity and perhaps more so individuality as we are all working towards a common goal but we can still deliver the best approaches with creativity as it comes down to the delivery methods.

With this stated, I have long been convinced that we have some of the absolute best people and this includes our teachers, administrators, classroom aides, etc. that all are working with our students day in and day out and more so that we have them prepared as best as we can.

For this, I am both thankful and appreciative as I will put our staff up against that of any other staff as I know our folks are bringing their absolute best each day and they do this because they have a love, passion and enthusiasm for our students.

In closing, we simply must make the most of the long winter days and spring will arrive.  When it does we will all rejoice.

Should you have questions or comments, I am always available and you can do this by contacting me at the VCSC administration building by calling 812-882-4844 or by e-mail at parsleyg@vcsc.k12.in.us.
