Michael A. Hutchison

Michael Hutchison is a
social studies teacher at Lincoln High School. His professional experience
includes a strong background in computer technology and 24 years as a social
studies teacher. A 1973 Lincoln graduate, Hutchison was active in speech and debate teams, serving as president his senior year when he also was state finals alternate in the discussion event. He received the Gimbel Award as the outstanding speech team member his senior year. He also was an assistant editor of the Old Post Sentinel. Hutchison holds an Associate’s degree in Journalism from Vincennes University and a Bachelor’s degree in social studies education from Indiana State University, receiving the latter in 1978. Active in student government, he was president pro tem of the student senate. In 1982 ISU awarded him a Master’s degree in education. In addition to his long career at Lincoln, Hutchison has taught part-time at Vincennes University.

As a Lincoln teacher Hutchison received state,
national, and international awards and prizes for use of computer and cable
television technology in the classroom. This recognition came from groups such
as the International Society for Technology in Education, Indiana Computer
Educators, Technology and Learning magazine and through competition to
identify and reward outstanding educators. Cable in the Classroom
magazine named him a "champion teacher." He has been a presenter at education
technology conferences at state and national levels.
Hutchison is a member of several technology-related groups including PBS TeacherSource Advisory Group, Classroom Connect Advisory Group, International Society for Technology in Education, and Indiana Computer Educators. The work of Hutchison and his students has been featured in publications related to computer and cable technology. Hutchison also has written activity books and lesson plans, most notably for Ken Burns’ productions The Civil War, Baseball, Empire of the Air, and Horatio’s Drive. He also hosts an online social studies teachers’ forum featuring nationally known guests, including Burns. In other activities at Lincoln, Hutchison was a faculty co-sponsor for the class of 1984, a coach of the Lincoln speech team, and advisor to the Old Post Sentinel. While in the latter role, the student newspaper became one of the first in the area to be published entirely by computer technology. Hutchison is married to the former Suzie Conrad, daughter of Frank Conrad, who was a long-time Lincoln social studies teacher and coach. The Hutchison's have two daughters, both Lincoln graduates—Katie Elizabeth, class of 1998, and Molly Sue, 2001.
