DR. MIRIAM G. BUCK
Dr. Miriam G. Buck, a 1914 graduate of Lincoln who has earned a reputation as a teacher and a research chemist, is being honored. In 1959 VU honored the graduate with a Distinguished Alumna Citation for her work with the Atomic Energy Division of Dupont and Company in Wilmington, Delaware.
After VU, Dr. Buck continued her education at Wooster College, in Wooster, Ohio, for one year. She then transferred to the University of Illinois, where she earned her bachelors and masters degrees. Her doctorate in Physical Chemistry was obtained at the University of Chicago in 1935.
She has served as a member of chemisry faculties at Vincennes University, the University of Illinois, the University of Chicago, Huntington College of Alabama, Connecticut College for Women, Oklahoma College for Women, James Millikin University, and Franklin College.
After leaving the academic field, Dr. Buck joined the staff of the Aluminum Ore Company of East St. Louis as a chemist, then as a researcher with the National Defense Research Committee of Scientific Research and Development, and business manager of the Central Laboratory of Northwestern University. Before retiring in Vincennes, Dr. Buck spent the final years of her career preparing reports and supplying technical information for the chemical plant, DuPont, and the Technical Division, which she joined in 1951, as part of the company's explosives department.
