LUCY
GENE (MC GIFFEN) MARTINDALE
Lucy graduated from Lincoln High 5chool in 1972, the fourth and youngest child of Webster and Gertrude McGiffen, lifelong residents of Knox County. she enrolled at Indiana University in Bloomington in the fall of 1972 as a nursing major. By the middle of her sophomore year she decided to change her major to business and transferred to the IU Business School. She graduated in the spring of 1976 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Business with a Finance major. In 1984, Lucy earned an Masters in Business Administration from Campbell University.
She started her career with American Hospital Supply Company in Chicago in their financial management-training program. In the four years she was with American Hospital she gained valuable experience in finance, operations and general management. Being one of the few women in management at that time, she benefited from two mentors who took a special interest in her and invested their time in helping her grow professionally, In 1979, while Lucy was a District Operations Manger in Louisville, Ky she won the District Operations Manager of the Year award.
In 1980, Lucy joined Bristol Myers and worked in a variety of financial positions for Mead Johnson, Her role as Division Controller for the pharmaceutical business gave her the opportunity to work directly with the President and General Manager of the division and to learn the pharmaceutical business.
A move to North Carolina in 1983, prompted by her spouse's transfer, opened up the opportunity to work for Glaxo, Inc. Glaxo was a small US Division of the London based pharmaceutical company, Glaxo, plc. Her industry experience proved valuable and she joined Glaxo in 1984 as Budget Manager. The company was small and growing rapidly as new products were successfully launched. She expanded her responsibilities quickly as the company grew and was named Vice President, Financial Planning and Analysis in 1989, one of the f irst two women vice presidents in the company. Glaxo merged with BurroughsWellcome in 1995 creating GlaxoWellcome, the world's largest pharmaceutical company, and Lucy was responsible for bringing the two companies' financial plans together and developing the savings targets that would result from the merger of the two companies.
She expanded her experience to include the international arena in 1996 when she was appointed to Vice President and Finance Director for Worldwide Research and Development. In this role, Lucy serves on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the R&D company and is responsible for the allocation and review of $2 billion annual investment in R&D. It has provided her the opportunity to travel internationally and to manage a global Finance staff
Lucy also has a rewarding life outside the work place. She and her spouse of 24 years, Al Martindale, are the proud parents of two children Meredith, 13 and Philip, B. Lucy and Al are both active volunteers at Durham Academy, their children's school. Both parents are also on the sidelines cheering their children's teams in basketball, soccer, f ield hockey and lacrosse.
Lucy also believes in community involvement, a value that was instilled at an early age by her family. She has been active in United Way and is a member of the Indiana University Alumni Foundation, Phi Kappa Phi, the Planning Forum and the Institute of Management Accountants, She is a past president of the North Carolina State University Humanities Foundation and past member of the North Carolina State University Board of Visitors. Presently, she serves on the Appalachian State University Walker College of Business advisory council and the Durham Academy Board of Trustees. She and Al just successfully completed chairing the Annual Fund Campaign for Durham Academy, raising over $600,000 in gifts to the school.
