Stephen Frederick Spencer

Stephen Spencer was born in Vincennes, the son of Dr. Frederic and Virginia Spencer. His father was a physician in Vincennes for more than 50 years. Steve graduated from Lincoln High School in 1964 and Indiana University in 1975. He began his career selling medical devices for the American Hospital Supply Company, and within five years became a divisional general manager of the medical division of the company’s Hamilton Industries. From 1979 through 1992 Steve held various positions with a number of top medical companies that included G.D. Searle Life Support Systems, Bristol Meyer’s Unitek Division, Hoffman LaRoche, Union Broach and the Marmon Group’s M.D. Tech. Division. In 1992 he was recruited by Carr Metal Products as the vice president of sales and marketing in the sterilization case/tray industry. In March 1996 he launched a new company called Sterilization Cassette Systems. The organization went through a variety of partnership and name changes and in November 2004 reorganized as SCS doing business as Advantis Medical, Inc. Eight months later Steve bought control and 100-percent ownership in the company. In early 2007 Steve completed a multimillion-dollar merger of Advantis Medical, Inc. with Round Table Health Partners to form Avalign Technologies, a company that focuses on acquiring orthopedic manufacturing companies in the instrument and implant sector. He is currently serving as the chief executive officer and as a member of the company’s board of directors. His company has been honored by the IU Kelley School of Business as one of Indiana’s fastest growing companies and also received the Richard Lugar Economic Achievement Award for its contribution to the growth of jobs in the Indiana Business Community. In addition, Steve and his wife, Sandy, are the owners of Best Cabinets, a large cabinet retailer featuring KraftMaid products. Other business interests include being the principal investor in Business Management Systems, a software company currently developing “Velocity ERP,” a specific manufacturing computer software product. He has had numerous articles published in the medical equipment field. He serves his community as a corporate board member of the Johnson County Development Corporation and is a member of the Business Advisory Council of the Johnson County REMC plus numerous other community humanitarian endeavors. The Spencers live in Greenwood, Indiana.
