Students study the techniques and conventions of the various literary genres: poetry, drama, novel, short story, biography, essay, nonfiction, journal/diary. They focus on the effectiveness of various genres in achieving authors' purposes. Students illustrate their understanding through discussion and writing activities, both responsive and analytical.

Students integrate language, literature, writing, and oral communication in a focused study of literature, philosophy, art, history, and other aspects of culture. The "honors" nature of the course comes from a more demanding selection of literature, a more intellectual level of discussion, more freedom and creativity from students in their writing, and more student-led discussions.

Students integrate language, literature, writing, and oral communication. They study the ways that language can be adapted for different audiences, purposes, and situations to reflect mature thinking, learning, and communication.

Students develop writing skills by using the writing process: prewriting, drafting, peer sharing, revising, editing, and final production. By using this process, they learn to develop ideas through use of thesis statements, topic sentences, supporting ideas, transitions, and conclusions. As they write, students also learn the accepted conventions of language, style, mechanics, usage, and format.

Students develop informative writing skills by using the writing process: prewriting, drafting, peer sharing, revising, editing, and final production. They continue to use structural elements (thesis statements, topic sentences, supporting ideas, transitions, and conclusions). Students also learn to integrate research into their written work.

Students focus on the universal themes in literature: journey of the hero, trials of youth, search for identity, and others. Students explore the authors' treatments of the themes through different genres.

As in English 9, students integrate language, literature, writing, and oral communication. They study the ways that language can be adapted for different audiences, purposes, and situations to reflect mature thinking, learning, and communication.

Students study and practice the basic principles and techniques of effective oral communication. In addition, students also spend some time adapting speech to different audiences and purposes. Students have opportunities to present different types of oral presentations, including viewpoint, instructional, demonstration, informative, persuasive, and impromptu.

Students explore a survey of the literature produced in the United States from pre-Revolutionary times to the present, focusing on representative works from various literary genres which reflect the American culture. Students illustrate their understanding of the connection of history, literature, and culture through discussion and writing activities, both responsive and analytical.

Formerly American Studies. Through an integrated study of language, literature, writing, and oral communication, students develop their use of language. Focusing on American literature, the study of a variety of literary genres provides students the opportunity to develop strategies for evaluating literature, identifying literary conventions, and determining authors' purposes. In composition exercises, students develop writing skills by using the writing process. The "honors" nature of the course comes from a more demanding selection of literature, a more intellectual level of discussion, more freedom and creativity from students in their writing, and more student-led discussions.

American literature selections provide opportunities to continue the study of literary themes.

Students further develop and refine writing skills by using the writing process: prewriting, drafting, peer sharing, revising, and editing. They continue to use structural elements (thesis statements, topic sentences, supporting ideas, transitions, and conclusions) in persuasive writing and formal arguments.

Students focus on surveys of literature written by major authors of the Western and Eastern worlds. Students discuss historical influences, themes, and literary genres. In addition to reading, students illustrate their understanding through discussion and written interpretations.

Students enroll independently in two courses that together comprise the AP English Literature and Composition course. In an intensive study of English literature, students read a survey of British literature. In an intensive study of composition, students spend considerable time preparing written responses to literature. Students also spend time researching and preparing an argumentative paper. Students approach these studies in manners consistent with AP guidelines throughout the study of both English literature and composition.
* Students who take the intensive composition portion have the option of taking it for college credit from Vincennes University provided they meet the criteria established by VU.

Students in creative writing combine literary creativity with the discipline of written discourse. Students focus on using language to convey ideas, emotions, moods, and visual images. Students become familiar with literary elements through reading and studying published models of creative writing and learn to use them in their own writing. Through oral and written discussions, students learn to evaluate and respond to their own and other's writing.

Students study both the plays and poetry of William Shakespeare. When the opportunity is available, the class also attends a live performance of a play. Students will both read the plays and watch videos of some plays to see how they are actually performed.

Students undertake an intense study of classical Greek mythology. This course emphasizes the ancient myths, early gods and goddesses, heroes, and the four ages of man. A study of vocabulary and literary allusions derived from classical mythology comprises a part of the course. Essays will also focus on mythological themes that are reflected in Greek culture.

Students study a survey of classical Greek and Roman literature, including great authors from Homer to Dante. Students also explore the influences of classical literary patterns, themes, and conventions on modern literature. Their understanding of these concepts is illustrated through oral and written discussion.

Students refine their skills in journalistic writing, layout, design, and typography. Students plan, publish, market, and distribute their school yearbook.

Students refine their skills in journalistic writing, layout, design, and typography. Students plan, publish, market, and distribute their school newspaper.

The course is a supplemental course that provides students with individualized instruction designed to support success in completing language arts course work aligned with Indiana's Academic Standards for English/Language Arts in Grades 10-12 and focusing on the Writing Standards. This course does not meet English credit requirements for graduation. This course may be offered for one to eight elective English credits.
