The Modern Presidency

A student created project involving utilization of cable television technology and computer access during Fall 1997.

Created by students enrolled in Introduction to Social Science class (freshman level) at Vincennes Lincoln High School, Vincennes, Indiana, during October and November, 1997.  Teacher of the class is Mr. Michael Hutchison.

Students used the Discovery Channel School series, The Modern Presidency to research 20th  Century presidents.  They were required to create a web page highlighting their research and their president.

Special thanks and acknowledgments to:

Mrs. Tish Raff, Discovery Channel Subject Area Mentor, Modern Presidency Series, for her encouragement and help during the summer and fall of 1997.

Mr. Don Taylor, director of systems technology at Lincoln High School, who provided encouragement, taped the entire "Modern Presidency" series for me, and also purchased the Presidency series from PBS in order for both the freshmen and senior classes to complete their projects.

Mrs. Sandy Crowley, Lincoln High School Media Specialist, for her understanding in allowing our class to use the Media Center computers to research presidents and create web pages.  Special thanks for putting up with 26 boisterous high school freshmen nearly daily for four weeks at 55 minutes at a time.

Mrs. Jeanne Puacz, student teacher from Indiana State University, Terre Haute, who assisted Mrs. Crowley this semester.  Mrs. P. was instrumental not only in aiding in the development of these pages, but also in helping my two Government classes create Power Point presentations on the Modern Presidency.

Mr. David Libby of the Vincennes Community School Corporation Technology office.  Mr. Libby graciously worked to put these pages on the school corporation server, and also provided suggestions on how these pages might be linked.   David also made the senior Government classes Power Point presentations available for download.

Mr. Wes Reynolds of the Vincennes Community School Corporation Technology office for his assistance in providing his guidance and help, especially in giving the class space on the corporation server to store web pages and Power Point projects.

Student produced Power Point presentations
As part of their requirement for the Modern Presidency, students in my two senior level Government classes created Microsoft Power Point presentations.  These presentations followed similar formats to the web pages and were graded.  They are available here for review in "zipped" format.  WinZip  is recommended for anyone needing an "unzipping" utility. They can be uncompressed and viewed by persons with the Power Point application.  A viewer is provided for those without Power Point.  Slides can be seen, but no animation nor music is available.
