Information about the Old Cathedral

St. Francis Xavier Church in Vincennes, Indiana is also known as the “Old Cathedral” Church. It is the oldest church in Indiana. The current church is the third church to be built on this site and was built between 1824 and 1834. The first church was a crude log cabin built in 1749 and was the first Catholic Parish in the state of Indiana.

It is known today as a complex because it has the church, the Old Cathedral library, a museum and the Old French and Indiana Cemetery. There are over four thousand early settlers of this area buried in the cemetery. The tombstones are so old that it is hard to read the names on some of them. Some of them have a different style of writing on them.

On the front of the church are very tall pillars. They are made of Poplar trees protected by plaster. They were cut off a farm here in Vincennes. The church has a lot of very pretty stained glass windows. Over the main altar, there is a very pretty painting.

Inside the church there is a crypt where four bishops are buried. Above the front entrance into the church are 3 statues. They are St. Patrick, St. Francis Xavier, and St. Joanne D'Arc.

The library attached to the church is the oldest library in Indiana. There are a lot of really old books in the library and interesting things that tell about the history of the church. The church complex sits next to the Wabash River.
