"Being in the news
business for some 30-plus years, radio and newspaper, I had the
priviledge of meeting the Vincennes Native. A news conference with
this man was a show in itself. Many time he made the statement that
if you had to use raw language in an effort to get a laugh then you
were not really a comedian......I remember as a newsman I covered
the event when the Red Skelton was dedicated and he spoke. I
remember that he stood on the podium at the bridge and said "As I
look down below this bridge at the Wabash River I remember this is
where I learned to swim, and don't think it was not tough in that
full of sack of cats".......
"Several years ago, when Mr. Skelton was a young boy, he use to go
by the large house and always wonder what it was like inside. My dad
and I showed him most of the house from attic to basement. He
thanked us for the visit, and stated that it was really something
that was a memory of his young boyhood."
