Developmental Placement

1. Developmental Placement is the concept that children should start school and be
subsequently promoted on the basis of their developmental age rather than their
    chronological age.

Chronological Age is merely the number of days a child has lived since birth.

Developmental Age is the physical, neurological, social, emotional, and intellectual
growth changes which have occurred within a particular child, are unique to him and
makes him different from every other child.

All children mature at slightly different rates.  A child's developmental age may or may
not correspond  with his or her chronological age.

Over 70 years of research and data have gone into establishing this philosophy of
   developmental placement.

2. Learning Readiness and School Readiness are two entirely different subjects.

Learning Readiness is present at birth.  Children are always learning.

School Readiness requires much more than just learning.  It involves possessing the
developmental abilities with which to cope with a structured school situation and learn
at the same time.  School readiness is not the same thing as intelligence.

3. School Successis based more on developmental age than chronological age,
intelligence,  reading ability or previous learning experiences.

4. Maturationis controlled chiefly by genetic and constitutional factors.

5. Environmental Factors  such as educational stimulation, tutoring, and preschool can
support and enhance growth, but they can not hurry nor can they change the
   maturation of a child.

6. Overplaced Children are those children who go to school before they are
developmentally ready.  Overplaced children do not catch up with extra work and
tutoring.  They need the gift of time.

7. Transitional/Interim Classes (a class before first grade) give children the extra time
they must have for maturation (development) if the are to be successful in school and
as a total person.  Children in transitional classes are generally normal children with
average or above intelligence - some of them are gifted.
