Our school consists of 16 classrooms, a Title One reading program, a Title One math program, music, art, and P.E. classrooms, speech room., L.D. room, MIMH room, media center, a Reading Lab, parent-resource center, all purpose room, kitchen, principal's office, nurse's office and a computer lab.
The instructional day for Vigo Elementary School is 8:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. .
The enrollment at Vigo Elementary is 363 students. The ethnic breakdown for Vigo is: White: 95.6% Black: 1.9% Multiracial: .2.5% The student population has 51% walking students and 49% bus students.
Approximately 125 students eat school breakfast each day. Morning milk is available to all students. An after-school program is available until 6:00 p.m. daily. Thirty-five students participate in this program. Supervised school care is available at 7:30 a.m. each morning. This involves approximately 75 children per day.
Each school year since 1990-91, Vigo School has received incentive monies due to significant increases in 4 target areas: attendance, mathematics, language arts, and total battery. An innovative reading program is used by Title 1. Literacy groups are used in the Title One room with the Title One teacher and 3 aides, along with the classroom teachers. The fifth graders participate in a community involvement program offered by law enforcement. This is the D.A.R.E. program. We are involved in new techniques for teaching.
All classrooms have computers with Internet access. Each teacher also has an e-mail address with classroom access. We have a very active Student Council with representation from grades 3, 4, and 5.We have a very active PTO organization with a yearly budget of $7500.
Visitors are always welcome in our building and should report to the front office upon arrival.
