VCSC Police Chief Aaron Luce recently visited Little Alice Learning Center to talk with students about the importance of staying safe outdoors.

During his visit, Chief Luce shared simple but important lessons about street safety, including how to stop at the curb, look left, right, and left again before crossing, and always cross the street with a trusted adult.

He also discussed sidewalk safety, reminding students to stay on the sidewalk, keep a safe distance from the curb, and watch carefully for cars entering and exiting driveways.

In addition to the safety tips, students had the opportunity to ask questions about what it’s like directing traffic and how he stays safe while on duty.

Chief Luce explained how officers stay alert, use safety equipment, and work carefully to protect both themselves and the community.

These early conversations help build strong safety habits, and families can continue reinforcing those lessons at home.

Here are a few simple ways parents can review safety topics with their children:

  • Practice stopping at the curb and looking left, right, and left again.

  • Always cross at corners or crosswalks with a trusted adult.

  • Hold hands in parking lots and stay close to vehicles.

  • Remind children to walk — not run — near streets or cars.

  • Wear bright or reflective clothing so drivers can see you.

  • Stay on sidewalks and watch carefully for cars backing out of driveways.

  • Talk through your family’s safe route when walking in your neighborhood.

We appreciate Chief Luce taking the time to help our youngest learners understand how to stay safe each day.
