Elks Lodge 291 in Vincennes awarded a $4,250 grant to the Vincennes Lincoln High School Army JROTC Program (Alice Battalion).

The check was presented to the program during a ceremony after school on Wednesday.

The donation will be used to purchase essential equipment, including 2-way radios, safety vests, sabers, flashlights, sweatshirts, white t-shirts, polo shirts, khakis, a 4-foot wall, skirts, rucksacks, and Color Guard harnesses.

These supplies will enhance the JROTC program’s ability to conduct a variety of activities throughout the year, such as Color Guard operations, parking details, Raider Competitions, team building, leadership development, and fostering esprit de corps.

LHS student and Cadet Battalion Commander Kyler Durham expressed his gratitude for the donation, saying, “I couldn’t stop smiling. The JROTC program teaches kids about volunteerism and hard work. Being able to get supplies for events where we give back to the community is a great feeling.”

The Alice Battalion was established during the 2009-2010 school year and operates like an army battalion, led by Retired First Sergeant Brian Deckard and Retired Lieutenant Colonel Todd Baker.

The program currently includes 68 cadets in grades 8-12, with an average of 50-80 participants each year.

Ret. 1SG Deckard shared his appreciation for the grant, stating, “This generous donation from Elks Lodge 291 enables us to continue providing valuable experiences for our cadets. Our mission is to inspire young people to become better citizens, and this funding will support activities that promote discipline, leadership, and a strong commitment to service.”

Elks Lodge 291 Secretary Jim Gislason and Exalted Ruler Gary Stiles presented the check.

“I credit Mr. Parsley for bringing this program to Lincoln High School,” said Gislason.

“We work with the cadets at the Military Museum and other volunteer events, and we’re happy to support them.”

Alice Battalion cadets are deeply involved in their community, volunteering for local events and supporting various organizations.

Their efforts include assisting with activities at the Indiana Military Museum, fundraising marathons, and helping nonprofit groups.

VCSC extends its gratitude to Elks Lodge 291 and members Verne Houchins, Bruce Deckard, Jim Gislason, and Gary Stiles for their generous support of the Alice Battalion.
