School Safety Grant Award

VPD School Safety Grant Award

The Vincennes Police Department was awarded a total of two grants in the total amount of $837,422.00 for increased school safety.

Mayor Joe Yochum states, “The Safety and Security of our city’s youth is of the utmost importance to everyone in Vincennes and the awarding of this grant is a testament to just that. Under Chief Hillenbrand’s direction, not only will 4 additional School Resource Officers be patrolling Vincennes School Corporation and Vincennes Catholic Schools, but increased safety measures will be in place for the educational day and school events beginning in the 2024-2025 school year.”

The School Violence Prevention Grant will allow for the installation of 3M LLumar Safety & Security Film on all city schools (VCSC and Vincennes Catholic) to deter and delay entry in the case of an attempted forced entry. Additionally, mobile weapon detectors will be purchased for use at school events for the safety of students and spectators. VPD is awarded $337,422 in total from this grant and is one of six recipients in the State of Indiana.

The COPS Hiring Program awarded $500,000 over five years to build an SRO workforce that adds four additional SRO positions in city schools. VPD is one of only five recipients in Indiana to receive this funding,

Both are federal grants that have never been awarded in the area previously.
