Fifth and fourth-grade students at VCSC had the opportunity to explore a variety of careers through engaging presentations from local professionals.
During the morning session, Good Samaritan’s Tara Cardinal, along with VCSC’s Kaleena McCormick and Nathan Springfield, spoke with fifth-grade students about their careers and the paths they took to get there.
Tara Cardinal, an Occupational Therapist, explained how her field helps individuals improve their ability to perform everyday tasks.
She demonstrated some of the specialized equipment she uses in her work and even gave students a hands-on experience testing their strength with these tools.
Kaleena McCormick, the College Readiness Coordinator at Clark Middle School, shared how she helps sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students explore college and career opportunities. She discussed the importance of planning ahead and being aware of future educational pathways.
Nathan Springfield, who manages VCSC’s Facebook pages and website, spoke about his previous role as Bureau Chief at WTHI and his current work operating his own news and weather website, We Are Knox County.
He shared how he turned the website from a hobby into a business, giving students insight into journalism, digital media, and entrepreneurship.
In the afternoon, fourth-grade students had their own career exploration session with professionals from Vincennes University and Flourish.
Melissa Brothers and Amanda Jerrell, both Surgical Technologists at Vincennes University, introduced students to the field of surgical technology.
They brought equipment for students to try out and discussed the education and skills necessary for their profession.
They also taught students about the importance of protecting themselves from germs by using personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves.
Students participated in a hands-on activity where they put on gloves and rubbed shaving cream on their hands, then attempted to remove the gloves without getting any "germs" on their skin.
Kaley Decker, an Acupuncturist with Flourish, spoke about her career, the education required for her field, and the importance of maintaining a positive mindset in any profession.
Ingrid Hatfield, a coach at Vincennes University, shared her journey in athletics, emphasizing the dedication and hard work needed to succeed. She also stressed the importance of academics and encouraged students to stay focused on their studies.
Students also had the exciting opportunity to interact with members of the VU Women’s Basketball Team—Marta Gutierrez, Iris Comesana, and Delora Pricop.
The players shared their experiences in athletics, discussing teamwork, perseverance, and goal-setting.
VCSC appreciates the time and effort of all the professionals who shared their expertise and inspired students.
