A Franklin Elementary teacher is being hailed as a hero after saving a student’s life earlier this spring.
Renae Wild, a second-grade teacher at the school, was formally recognized by Vincennes City Fire Chief Bret Bobe during a special ceremony on Tuesday.
She was presented with a Certificate of Heroism for her swift and courageous actions.
The incident occurred in April during what began as a typical school day.
A student in Mrs. Wild’s classroom began choking after accidentally swallowing part of a pencil they had been chewing on.
Acting immediately, Mrs. Wild remained calm and performed the Heimlich maneuver—successfully dislodging the object and allowing the student to breathe again.
“I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Wild for her quick-thinking and courageous actions in saving a choking student,” said Franklin Interim Principal Susan Marchino.
“Her calm, decisive response made all the difference. Mrs. Wild’s actions are a powerful reminder of the critical role our teachers play—not only in educating, but also in caring for and protecting our children each day. Her dedication and composure under pressure exemplify the very best of our school community.”
