Every Vincennes Community School Corporation building will soon have a new tool to help keep students and staff informed when severe weather threatens.

Emergency weather radios are being distributed across the Vincennes Community School Corporation thanks to a donation from Lauren and Andrew Hinz. The radios provide schools with a direct source for emergency weather information, even when power, internet or cellular service may be unavailable.

For Lauren, Dean at Tecumseh-Harrison Elementary, the idea behind the donation is personal.

“Weather safety and preparation has been a part of who I am from childhood to adulthood,” Hinz said. “More importantly, school safety is a top priority for me as an employee and parent.”

That passion for preparedness led Lauren to recognize an opportunity to provide VCSC schools with an additional safeguard.

“I saw a need for emergency weather radios in our schools to provide reliable backup during severe weather and other emergencies,” she said. “This commitment to preparedness is why my husband, Andrew, and I decided to donate an emergency weather radio to each VCSC school.”

VCSC Police Chief Aaron Luce says additions like these are especially valuable because preparedness happens before an emergency ever begins.

“Safer schools start with early preparation and prevention, and these weather radios are an excellent tool to help make that possible,” Luce said.

The VCSC sincerely thanks Lauren and Andrew Hinz for their thoughtful donation and for helping strengthen the safety and preparedness of our schools.
